Fatal house fire in Innisfil
A son's heroic efforts to save his father from a burning house on January 5 were in vain. The body of an 82 year old male, identified by neighbours as Al Poirier, was later found in the fire-gutted one-storey home on Henderson Drive, off 25 Sideroad in Innisfil.
Neighbour Helen Miller awoke shortly after 2 a.m. on January 5, to discover her home filled with smoke. She called 911 - and then called Poirier's son, whose home is just on the other side of her house.
"I called next door to the son and told him his dad's house was on fire. He ran outside and tried to get into the house to rescue his dad," Miller said.
Police and fire arrived within minutes, to find the home fully engulfed in flames. The 53 year old son was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. He was treated and released.
Miller identified the victim as Al Poirier. "We knew him for 17 or 18 years, and you couldn't ask for a better neighbour.... The son is very distraught."
The Fire Marshal's Office is conducting an investigation into the cause of the blaze, and whether there were working smoke detectors in the home. No foul play is suspected.
