Welcome to Cherry Pickin’, where we at QMI Agency analyze Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada each week.

It was the same old story for Grapes on Saturday night.

Leafs hosting a primetime game, the Oilers are still plummeting into oblivion, and he’s wearing an outrageous floral suit and tie.

At some point, we’re hoping Don throws us a curve ball with his outfit and sports a black blazer with a grey tie, but based on his lack of air time, we think he’s going to milk the spotlight while he can.

The suit isn’t bothersome because it’s brown per say, but it’s the shade of brown combined with the bright yellow and white flowers that certainly turns the amp up to 11.

Now onto more pressing matters...

What Don likes this week:

-Vancouver’s play of late: “Reminds me of the way L.A. (Kings) play in the playoffs. Now watch these guys, this is way L.A. played in the playoffs last year. And if these guys can keep it up...these guys work...kids work like this.”

-Minnesota Wild defenceman Keith Ballard’s hit on Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry: “I know Corey’s watching right now but it’s a hockey hit, he (Ballard) doesn’t go that low I think it’s a clean hit. It’s a little low but he’s hurt now...Corey is one of my favourites.”

-Winnipeg Jets rookie goaltender Michael Hutchinson’s stellar play: “MVP of the playoffs in the American Hockey League. He’s 5-0-1, I’ll tell you boy, this is really something to watch him play too. I mean you wonder why it looks like Winnipeg might make the playoffs, this is one of the reasons.

But it wasn’t all white and yellow flowers with Don, as he continued to try and make sense of what’s going on with the Edmonton Oilers.

“Well, this is a big deal. You can’t panic right now. The other night somebody went on, and I’m not going to mention his name. You can’t turn on each other, you can’t say well you have to have pride...what goes on in the dressing room stays in the dressing room...pull together you guys.”

And Don stoked the fire when he suggested the Oilers should just focus on getting top ranked junior prospect Connor McDavid of the OHL’s Erie Otters.

“You got three top in the draft...don’t worry cause you’re going to get McDavid.”

Grapes and Ron ended the segment with a fitting tribute to Jean Beliveau, the Montreal Canadiens icon who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83.

Cherry said the very first time he saw Beliveau was when he was playing for the rival Bruins against the Habs.

He brought up an old photo of the two of them playing against each other and talked about the time he knocked Jean down.

“I knocked him down here and I’ll tell you boy we met him a few times in the playoffs. It was my claim to fame, I tried to get a penalty.”

“I used to see him all the time...at the banquets. It was unbelievable, what a guy, class guy....class all the time but he was regal.”

Don ended with his favourite photo of Jean with a young fan.

“I think this is in Montreal or Quebec but he always had time for everybody that’s the thing everyone talks about. Look at the little kid, he was a beautiful, beautiful guy.”
