Great Canadian Dollar Store opens in Bradford

By Bradford Times Staff

The Great Canadian Dollar Store officially opened its doors at 164 Holland St. West, in the Holland Square Plaza, last Saturday – and franchisee Ashtar Pauls was welcomed to the community by Mayor Rob Keffer and Town Councillors, the Bradford Board of Trade, and by Gerry Russ.

Russ, President of Great Canadian Dollar Stores, praised Pauls for investing in her community, and spoke about the success of his company, which had its start in British Columbia but has now expanded, coast to coast. The Bradford store is number 116, he said; “We are going to be at 118 stores in three weeks,” with additional openings in Huntsville, Ontario, and Sydney, Nova Scotia.

The store is more of a Junior Department Store than the typical dollar store, with housewares, stationery, craft supplies, home décor items, hardware, linens, holiday and seasonal supplies, and a huge selection of party goods and celebratory balloons.

“It's great that you're opening this store close to the downtown,” said Mayor Keffer, presenting a certificate to Pauls, her husband Sam Perko, and son Emmanuel, 9. “This store is very inviting. It will be a destination.”

MP for York Simcoe, Peter Van Loan also brought greetings, and helped to cut the ribbon.

“Thanks to everybody for joining us today,” Ashtar said, as a steady stream of shoppers came through the doors.

“We will be doing the best things for Bradford... the best service,” said Sam. “Especially the balloons.”

Bradford's Great Canadian Dollar Store will be open 7 days a week, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.
